We've heard of the PlayStation phone for months, and it turns out that the leaked pictures and footage was right all along. Named the official Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY-we assume only to confuse the phone made its debut at a rather creepy ad during the Super Bowl last night. commercial depicts an elderly Japanese man thumb stitches realistic look to the mascot of the Google Android. The result is disturbing, to say the least, but then we could see the phone, which is actually pretty slick. Hopefully more gameplay footage and details will arrive soon.

Play PlayStation Xperia mobile phone is not exactly, but the PlayStation certified, which means that he will have access to the PlayStation exclusive library of software titles separate from the Android market. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Android device will be officially announced at Mobile World Congress in 10 days. We have seen leaks on the phone several times before. Phone / gaming device has a preview, reviewed and dissected many times so there is nothing new to our surprise there. The things left to talk about is the packaging, advertising and display booths that are used by retail stores.

A Duch website has published computer-generated image shows what the Xperia Play booth will look like. Display counter branded with the logo T-mobile so that the image leak may have come from T-mobile, or can only be an example of what co-branding could look like.

Phone on disply does not look like Play Xperia, but could Arc newly available only Xperia Sony Ericsson models have graphic designers for making illustrations.

Lately we get the specs Sony Ericsson through leaks, not with the official announcement. XPERIA Play is no exception. We managed to get a fairly detailed specification of the gadgets on this one.

What you get from the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play is the screen 4 "LCD FWVGA resolution (854 x 480 pixels). In it, there is Qualcomm 1GHz CPU with 205 Adreno GPU and 512 MB of RAM. MicroSD slot ensure you will always have enough free memory to games and 3.5mm audio jack allows you to enjoy them without disturbance sounds around you.

5 megapixel camera on the back can record 720p video. There is also a microUSB port. With a 1500 mAh battery which is considered sufficient to maintain Play XPERIA using Android 2.3 Gingerbread to stay alive for a long time.

The author is pleased to Play XPERIA, because this phone has a few surprises. Sony Ericsson's menu interface adapted to the 2.3 Android and Sony apparently will soon release this gadget to market.

With a slide-out game pad, 5.1-megapixel camera, 4-inch touchscreen and Android 2.3 Gingerbread running the show, the Play is a kingly device on paper.
But, in practice, it's a jack of all trades, and master of none. It's not as slick as rival smart phones, nor as engaging and usable as a portable console. Hampered by confusing software, it's hard to recommend the Play over its more competent rivals.
The Play will be available on a contract from about £30 per month when it hits shop shelves in April. It's also available SIM-free now for between £375 and £500.

The Play's headline feature is its slide-out game pad. It slips out from beneath the screen just like the Qwerty keyboard on plenty of other smart phones.
There are direction buttons on the left of the game pad, while the four iconic PlayStation buttons -- square, triangle, circle and cross -- sit on the right-hand side. This past quarter Sony Ericsson released the Xperia X8, an affordable mid-range Android handset, and pushed out the Xperia X10 to China and the US. Future Android offerings were not mentioned in the earnings call and analyst Carolina Milanesi of Gartner’s U.K. group was quick to point out that “Though they have nice products, competition is very tough as the refresh cycle on Android is very quick and the X10 by now almost seems dated.”

Other analysts were kinder and gentler on Sony Ericsson and its future prospectus. “They will need a successor to the X10, which I expect to be announced this quarter, and they also need to launch on Windows Phone 7 quite soon,” aid Daniel Djurberg, an analyst for Stockholm-based Nordea Bank. In addition to new Android handsets, this upcoming quarter may also see the debut of the long-rumored PlayStation phone, a smartphone that integrates with Sony’s successful PlayStation gaming console.

Two supposed slides depicting Sony Ericsson’s supposed 2011 Windows phone 7 line-up has leaked out via YouTube, and the two handsets shown appear pretty tasty.

The first, the Xperia X7, features a 4.3 inch WVGA screen, new dual core 1.2 ghz Qualcomm MSM8260 processor, 8.1 megapixel camera and HDMI out with Dolby Digital Plus surround sound.

The next is the Xperia X7 Mini, with a 3.5 inch WVGA screen, older generation Qualcomm QSD8250 1 Ghz processor, 10.1 Megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom and Xenon flash and comes with noise cancellation earphones.

Both devices depicted appear to be only basic outlines rather than photos, and knowing the Sony Ericsson fan base, who are famous for their fantastical but unrealistic renderings, I suspect we are mostly looking at fantasy rather than reality.

Im really confused.I have theme with flash menu (swf file),like equalizer.thm and equalize.swf and i was put swf file on tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash as like as i did on my W810 (i was success on w810).
my question,
-is it different between flash menu for w810 and k530?.

-can somebody help me to do this?..i was upload new directory from my computer document to k530 with xss+ 3.1,but it still doesnt work...and the menu still standart...

Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg confirmed in a Q3 2010 earnings conference call that the handset manufacturer will drop Symbian and produce a Windows Phone handset. The Verizon Wireless Salute is a basic slider phone for the feature-phobic. It's actually manufactured by ZTE, and is the Chinese company's first phone for Verizon. Like the LG Accolade ($9.99-$199.99, 3.5 stars) and the Samsung Gusto SCH-U360 ($0-$199.99, 3 stars), the ZTE Salute gives Verizon sales reps another option when someone walks up to the retail counter and asks for a phone that's "just a phone." There's nothing terribly wrong with the Salute, especially if you really want a slider. But there are several better choices on Verizon at virtually the same price.

Design and Call Quality
The Salute measures 4.0 by 2.0 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs four ounces. To me, the silver plastic construction feels cheap, though the blue LED around the circular control pad adds a little extra bling. Five function keys offer Send, End, Clear, and two soft keys that change function depending on the menu display. The impressive 2.4-inch LCD is a good size for a low-end device, and sports 240-by-320-pixel resolution. That's better than the 176-by-220 or even 128-by-160-pixel displays you'll find on similarly inexpensive phones. The flat, slide-out numeric keypad features rectangular plastic keys. Dialing numbers was pretty simple, though the keypad felt chintzy. At least the keys didn't wiggle around in their perches, which I've seen on some low-cost handsets.

The ZTE Salute is a dual-band 1xRTT (850/1900 MHz) device with no 3G or Wi-Fi capability. Unlike the Samsung Haven SCH-U320 ($39.99-$169.99, 2.5 stars), the Salute has Bluetooth. This way you can use it with a hands-free speakerphone, a Bluetooth-compatible car stereo, or a headset while driving. In my tests, voice quality was very good, as befits a Verizon phone. Callers sounded clear, if a little hollow, through the earpiece, and they said my voice came through just fine. Reception was average, and there was no background hiss or buzz.

Calls also sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Icon ($99, 4 stars) Bluetooth headset. Voice dialing worked fine over Bluetooth without training. The speakerphone sounded okay. I've heard worse; using this one outdoors should be fine as long as it's not too loud outside. Battery life was quite good at 5 hours and 48 minutes of talk time.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
The Salute offers a choice of three modestly animated home screen wallpapers and menu themes. The main menu itself contains nine icons arranged in a grid. It's pretty easy to get around using the control pad. The Settings menu has plenty of separate pages with just one choice on each, which, to me, was a bit confusing. The Networks-in-Motion-powered VZ Navigator 4.5.3 offers voice-enabled, turn-by-turn GPS directions, local search, and event listings for $9.99 per month. You can search the Web with Bing, or dive into the Polaris 6.1 browser to bring up basic mobile WAP pages. I'd suggest avoiding Verizon's extra-cost pair of e-mail clients, as this isn't a QWERTY device.

The 1.3-megapixel camera lacks a flash or auto-focus capability. Test photos were a bit bright and overexposed, but they'll suffice for throwaway shots. There's no music player, no video player, and no camcorder. The non-standard size 2.5mm headphone jack is at least semi-common for mono wired ear buds, which is all the Salute supports anyway. The media section is mostly for stored pictures, ringtones, and games. Verizon gives you 25 ringtones to get started, and VZW Tones Deluxe offers an on-board portal that soaks up extra megabyte charges if you don't have a data plan. You'll need to cram everything into 36MB of free internal memory, since there's no microSD card slot or device sync capability. You can share photos online or send them in picture messages, but e-mailing them isn't an option.

All told, the Salute is just okay, and not particularly exciting. Alternate options: the Samsung Haven SCH-U320 ($39.99-$169.99, 2.5 stars) is a flip phone that's aimed squarely at older consumers, with its big keys, big fonts, and useful lifestyle and emergency call focus, but it drops the Bluetooth and camera, which, to us, borders on unacceptable. If anything, go with the LG Accolade, which feels well-built and offers solid voice quality and excellent battery life. Your best bet for a low-cost Verizon feature phone remains the Samsung Intensity 2 SCH-U460 ($0-$199, 3 stars), which also skirts Verizon's irksome data plan requirement, but adds a very usable QWERTY keyboard and better social media connections.

The HTC Desire ($199 direct)

The HTC Desire ($199 direct) is US Cellular's best cell phone. It's about as powerful as the HTC Droid Incredible ($299.99, 4.5 stars) on Verizon, but it's cheaper to own. The Desire is also similar to the unlocked (and now discontinued) Google Nexus One, but in some ways, the Desire is even better. HTC's slick Sense UI, combined with the Desire's beautiful screen and fast processor, make this handset our new Editors' Choice for US Cellular smartphones.

Design and Call Quality
The HTC Desire measures 4.7 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.8 ounces. The soft touch housing is a mixture of black and dark grey, and looks a bit rounder than the Incredible's. The Desire feels expensive, and it's comfortable to hold for long periods. The striking 3.7-inch glass capacitive touch screen features 480-by-800-pixel resolution, and supports multi-touch gestures like pinch-to-zoom. An optical sensor replaces the Nexus One's mechanical trackball. It was a little fiddly in operation, but you won't need it often, thanks to the touch screen.

The HTC Desire is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (850/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. The nation's sixth-largest carrier, US Cellular offers service in 26 states, but roams on Verizon otherwise; be sure to check the coverage maps before deciding on this carrier. Voice calls sounded good but not great overall. HTC has been at this a while, and it shows in the Desire's clear sound. However, the tone was a little hollow in the earpiece. One caller said there was a pronounced "speakerphone" effect that wasn't present through a Samsung Acclaim (also on US Cellular) in a back-to-back comparison. Reception was fine.

Calls sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Icon ($99, 4 stars) Bluetooth headset. As with many Android devices, there's no voice dialing over Bluetooth, which can be a deal-breaker for some. The speakerphone sounded harsh and tinny, but it had a decent amount of gain. Battery life was average at 5 hours and 3 minutes of talk time.

User Interface and Apps
HTC Sense, the company's unified interface and application layer, makes another appearance on the Desire. The home screen features HTC's trademark large rolodex-style clock and animated weather widget, plus three soft keys on the screen above the touchpad. It allows for seven customizable home screens with preview thumbnails, and includes numerous full-screen information panels and other widgets. As with other recent HTC devices, I found Sense to be attractive, fast, and easy to use.

Underneath the Sense UI layer is Android 2.1. That means you can choose from over 70,000 apps in Android Market, and you'll likely run into fewer compatibility issues than on a handset with the older Android 1.6. HTC includes Friend Stream, which aggregates Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr updates. It also groups contacts and combines your Facebook and Google address books. The Web browser did a fabulous job with desktop HTML pages. Unlike a nearby Samsung Captivate ($199, 4 stars), the Desire's browser didn't have redundant brightness settings and zoom controls, so the browser worked exactly as expected.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
This is a stellar multimedia device, with one exception, which I'll get out of the way quickly: the microSD card slot is buried beneath the battery cover, and you have to pull the battery to swap cards. HTC throws in an 8GB card, and my 16GB SanDisk card worked fine; there's also 117MB of available internal storage. Here I'll recommend DoubleTwist (Free, 4 stars) for syncing music files and iTunes playlists with PCs or Macs, since swapping microSD cards isn't practical with this handset.

Music tracks sounded clear and full over Motorola S9-HD ($129, 3.5 stars) Bluetooth headphones. The standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack makes finding third-party wired ear buds easy; HTC tosses in a thin-sounding pair to get you started. The music player was easy to navigate and displayed medium-sized album art thumbnails. Standalone MP4, 3GP, WMV, and even 720p HD videos looked stunning on the Incredible's screen in full screen mode. Oddly, the video player itself is tucked inside the photo gallery, and doesn't get an icon of its own.

The 5-megapixel auto-focus camera includes an LED flash, face detection, and geotagging. This is reduced slightly from the HTC Incredible's 8-megapixel sensor. But in the real world, camera phones' optics matter more than megapixels. The Desire took sharp, colorful pictures both indoors and out, with no perceptible shutter lag or save times. Indoor shots with modest lighting were noisier but still usable, though the focus was a bit softer. The camcorder recorded slightly dark 1280-by-720-pixel videos that averaged 17 frames per second. But the real-time frame rate jumped around a lot at this resolution, and seemed to depend on the lighting conditions.

All told, if you're buying a smartphone and U.S. Cellular's coverage maps work for you, the HTC Desire is the phone to get. If you'd rather save another $120 up front, the Samsung Acclaim is a worthy second-tier option. It's slower, has a smaller screen, a poorer camera, and loses the HTC Sense UI. But it adds a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, has better battery life, and sounds a bit better on voice calls. Still, we'd save up the extra $120 for the Desire; it's that good.

The Sanyo Zio is one of the least expensive Android cell phones in America. But you're getting what you pay for here, with an old version of the OS that's missing key features, plenty of bugs, and a slow processor that has trouble dragging along some of the phone's higher-end elements.

Still, I don't want to minimize its main strength: The phone itself will run you between $229 and $249, but Cricket's plan means you'll only pay $55 per month for service with unlimited voice calls, text messages and 2GB of data—that even includes tax. That's at least $20 less per month than any other 3G Android phone out there. Over two years, that adds up to a lot of savings.
Physical Features
The 3.7-ounce Zio is a slim, rounded slab-style phone; it measures 4.6 by 2.3 by .5 inches (HWD), and is made of black and silver plastic with a soft-touch back. It feels fine except for the slick, almost-greasy-feeling 3.5-inch, 800-by-480-pixel plastic touch screen, which is responsive but just feels less pleasant to the touch than more expensive screens. The thick plastic covering over the screen also makes it appear dim.

In my tests, the Zio's reception wasn't great, matching the Cricket MSGM8 II in a weak-signal area, but unable to complete a call where the excellent BlackBerry Curve 8530 had no problems. It also isn't a great voice phone. The earpiece and speakerphone are both loud enough, but calls in the earpiece had a wobbly, thready quality and the speakerphone sounded harsh in my tests. Transmissions did a good job of muting background noise, although they were a bit muddy and scratchy. My calls were also plagued by a proximity sensor bug which prevented the screen from lighting up when I pulled the phone away from my face. The relatively accurate Nuance voice dialing worked with a Bluetooth headset, which is very unusual for an Android phone. Battery life, at 4 hours 5 minutes of talk time, is acceptable but on the low side.

Apps, Software and Multimedia Features
The Zio's stock Android 1.6 OS feels, nowadays, like something that's been pulled out of the dollar bin at a thrift store. It's inexcusable. While other manufacturers are also doing older versions of Android, they try to smooth them over a bit with social-networking widgets or Microsoft Exchange clients. Not here—there's no Microsoft Exchange support at all, no pinch-to-zoom, some annoying issues with keyboard accuracy and several bugs, including one which asked me to enter my Google ID over and over again. Cricket has added its own app store as an option beyond the Android Market, but it's a mess: poorly populated and with tiny little thumbnail previews of apps. Furthermore, a growing number of Android Market apps won't be compatible with Android 1.6 as time goes on. On the bright side, Kyocera says it will upgrade this phone to Android 2.1 soon.

I was encouraged by the inclusion of FutureDial's PC software for syncing the phone's contacts, calendar, and media with Microsoft Outlook, but that's also buggy. I couldn't get the software to successfully connect to the phone on a Windows 7 PC.

The combination of a 600-Mhz Qualcomm MSM7627, ARM11 processor and an 800-by-480 screen makes for sluggish performance. The Zio performed similarly to other lower-end Android phones like the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide ($179.99-$429.99, ) and Motorola Devour (Free-$79.99 with contract, ) on most benchmarks. But graphics performance, in terms of time it took to draw the screen, was the worst I've ever seen on any Android phone. That resulted in jerky game play in apps like the included Midnight Bowling demo.

Music and video playback are limited but manageable. There's 131 MB of free on-board memory, and the phone comes with a 1GB MicroSD card tucked into a slot in the side; our 16GB Kingston card worked just fine. The phone plays many different music formats including AAC, MP3, WMA, and OGG, but had trouble filing the artists of some of my music properly. The free syncing app doubleTwist () can fix that, though. MPEG4 video playback was smooth at 320x240 resolution but looked a bit compressed at 640 by 480.

The flashless 2-megapixel camera took very sharp photos both indoor and out in my tests. In low light, images had deep shadows but didn't show blur. Those images took a while to snap, though, with a 1.8-second shutter delay. The video camera ambitiously tries to shoot 640-by-480 footage, but the processor can only handle 2Mbps, one quarter of what I've seen on other phones. Outdoors that makes for slightly compressed-looking 24 frame-per-second videos, but indoors, videos are blurry, jerky, and useless.

Conclusions
The Sanyo Zio just isn't a very good Android phone. But it does many things that no other phone in Cricket's lineup can do. No other phone from the carrier has a browser this good, runs anywhere near this number of apps, or plugs so easily into Google's services.

The only other Android phone on a similar service plan right now is the Motorola i1 ($399.99, ) for Boost, which has its own problems. For one thing, it costs up to $170 more than the Zio up front. The i1 also runs on a much slower 2G network with an even-slower Android 1.5. If you're looking for a smartphone with an inexpensive monthly plan, I'd suggest considering the BlackBerry Curve 8530, which is available on MetroPCS, Cricket, and Virgin Mobile. I'm also keeping my eyes out for Cricket's upcoming Huawei M860 Android phone, which will ship with Android 2.1.

For now, I can't recommend the Zio. The upcoming Android 2.1 update may change that, as it will add everything from pinch-to-zoom and Facebook integration to better overall performance.

BlackBerry Curve 8530 (Virgin Mobile)

There are currently nine versions of the BlackBerry Curve 8530 for sale in the US. But the ones offered by Cricket, MetroPCS and Virgin Mobile demand special scrutiny. All three carriers sell this smartphone for a very low monthly rate, with no contract. Virgin's plans are a little more expensive than Metro's and Cricket's, but Virgin's network is both 3G (which Metro isn't) and available nationwide (which Cricket isn't). This is the only smartphone available for Virgin Mobile right now, and combined with the plans we think it's a very good buy.

If you didn't know, by the way, Virgin Mobile is Sprint; it's just one of Sprint's prepaid brands. So you should expect the same coverage, call quality and speeds on Virgin Mobile as you get on ordinary Sprint phones.

Design, Call Quality, and Plans
By this point, you know what makes the BlackBerry Curve 8530 tick. It measures 4.3 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.9 ounces. The Curve 8530 doesn't look exciting, but that's fine given its understated mission. The 2.4-inch, 320-by-240-pixel LCD screen looked bright and colorful, but it wasn't particularly sharp because of the low resolution. Typing on the QWERTY keyboard felt great, and I prefer the 8530's new trackpad to the unreliable old trackball, even if it's a little on the sensitive side.

The Curve 8530 is a dual-band EV-DO Rev 0 (850/1900 MHz) device. That means it hits 3G data speeds, a boon for Internet browsing, streaming radio, and other data-heavy apps. There's also an 802.11b/g radio for connecting to Wi-Fi hotspots. Voice calls sounded warm and clear, but not particularly loud, in both directions. One caller said my voice was a little choppier than usual. That's turning out to be a recurring theme with the 8530, which doesn't have quite the same top-notch RF reception as the older BlackBerry Curve 8330 (4.5 stars). It's just something to be aware of if you live in an area with marginal Sprint coverage.

Calls also sounded fine through an Aliph Jawbone Icon ($99, 4 stars) Bluetooth headset, and voice dialing worked well over Bluetooth. The speakerphone was nice and loud, as befits a BlackBerry. Battery life was disappointing at just four hours of talk time; oddly, that's more than an hour shorter than other Curve 8530 variants, even though the battery is the same size.

As always, the real draw here is Virgin Mobile's lower monthly prices. Plans range from $35 to $70 per month depending on the number of voice minutes; all include unlimited texting, e-mail, Web, and other data. None require signing two-year contracts, either.

Virgin preinstalled dedicated Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Google Maps apps. There's also a link to BlackBerry App World, which contains thousands of third-party free and paid apps. Like all BlackBerrys, the Curve 8530 supports push e-mail for up to 11 accounts, and hooks into Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes. Unfortunately, your company still needs a BlackBerry Enterprise Server to sync Exchange calendar and contact info over the air; individual subscribers are stuck syncing with a cable to their PCs. The stock Web browser is OK for WAP pages, but the free alternatives Opera Mini and Bitstream Bolt are better for the full Web.

The standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack is a boon for music lovers, because it makes it simple to find aftermarket ear buds. Virgin throws in a tinny sounding pair to get you started, along with a 2GB microSD card. The card slot underneath the battery cover is relatively easy to access, and accepts 32GB cards. My 16GB SanDisk card also worked fine. Music tracks sounded clear and punchy over Motorola S9-HD ($129, 3.5 stars) headphones. The music player displayed large album art and was very easy to use. The included BlackBerry Desktop Software works with Macs and PCs, and syncs various kinds of media including iTunes playlists. Standalone MP4 and 3GP videos played smoothly in full screen mode, even at 30 frames per second.

The 2-megapixel camera has neither an auto-focus nor a flash, and it takes middling photos both indoors and out. Crank the lights or take pictures on a sunny day, and it will do in a pinch. But it fell down hard in dimmer environments, with barely legible test shots. The camcorder maxed out at 320-by-240-pixels and 15 frames per second, but did the job otherwise.

We're fans of the Curve 8530 on all carriers. But the handset makes especially good sense on Virgin Mobile, MetroPCS, and Cricket, thanks to the balance of power and reasonable monthly fees. The Curve 8530 makes less sense on AT&T and Verizon, because you might as well pay another $50 or $100 at the retail counter and get something truly high-end, like a Motorola Droid X ($199, 4.5 stars) or an Apple iPhone 4 ($199, 4.5 stars).

For now, the BlackBerry Curve 8530 is America's go-to budget smartphone. Over on the main Sprint network, you'll pay around $20 more per month, but you'll have access to top-notch smartphones with hardware keyboards like the Samsung Epic 4G ($249, 4 stars) and the budget Samsung Intercept ($99, 3 stars. The new LG Rumor Touch promises to be another good option, since it now has a dedicated Virgin Mobile version in addition to Sprint's. It's not an actual smartphone, but it offers a quality combination of touch UI and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Stay tuned for a full review of that model.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz is a small and reasonably-priced phone with a terrific feature set, including most notably a full Web browser, an 8.1-megapixel camera, and HD video recording. But the Vivaz's balky, confusing, and often downright bizarre interface makes it a royal pain to use. As a result, I can't recommend it to anyone.

I'm not usually a hater. I like a wide range of devices—from the Symbian-powered, non-touchscreen Nokia E72 ($349, ) to the touchscreen Motorola Droid X ($199.99-569.99, ) and the hybrid BlackBerry Torch ($199.99-499.99, ). But all those gadgets have one thing in common: an interface that's at least somewhat adapted to their input method. Not the Vivaz, which combines a cheap, balky touchscreen, tiny interface elements, and itty-bitty ugly text to repel users.

The 2.8-inch screen is high resolution, but low quality. Even at 360 by 640 pixels, text and interface elements are often so tiny as to be nearly unusable. Colors seem pale, and the whole thing washes out in sunlight.

The Vivaz is an HSPA 3.6 phone that works on AT&T's and foreign 2G and 3G networks; it also features 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. The Vivaz gets mediocre reception, and it over-reports its signal strength. I had trouble connecting a call at one point while it displayed two bars. The earpiece and speakerphone are both clear, but not all that loud. Transmissions through the mic sound clear, but harsh and trebly, and plenty of background noise comes through. Battery life was decent for a 3G phone at 5 hours, 5 minutes of talk time.

The Vivaz comes with Vlingo's powerful voice command software, but you can't activate or even use it with a Bluetooth headset, and it's buried three levels deep in menus. By the time you find the voice command option, you might as well have typed the command.

Software and Interface
When I shook the box the Vivaz came in, a stylus on a little string fell out. That's a bad sign. If your phone needs a stylus to do anything other than write Chinese characters and make beautiful drawings, chances are your interface is totally broken.

As it turns out, the Vivaz has the worst interface I've encountered in years. You have to do everything on the touch screen, but the small, high-res screen shrinks many interface elements down to untouchably tiny size. Combined with the balky resistive screen, that results in a lot of inaccurate, frustrated grunting and stabbing.

The best example of this UI horror are the two on-screen keyboards. In portrait mode, the keys are insanely tiny. They make Palm Pre keys look like dinner plates. Turning the phone on its side, you get a landscape-mode keyboard that takes up the whole screen, so you don't see any of the context of what you're typing. The keyboard has no auto-correct, and it takes several presses to register many keys.

The horror doesn't stop there. Buttons don't do the expected; panels are pointless; programs crash. The phone's custom home screen consists primarily of a big animation of waves rather than useful widgets or data. You can easily jump over to a built-in Twitter app, which crashed several times during my testing.

The built-in Opera browser renders pages beautifully, but, once again, using it is a chore. Many pages default to showing text so tiny it's impossible to click on links. There is no pinch-zooming, and tap-zooming works unreliably. In the gallery app, swiping to the side didn't advance by one photo. It advanced by five or six, making it difficult to find an individual photo.

Apps and the Vivaz
The Vivaz's GPS works with free, built-in Google Maps, though once again text displayed was tiny, and I had to jab the Options button six times to pull up a menu. The assisted GPS locked in quickly, claiming I was a half-mile from my actual location.

The Vivaz is actually a Symbian Series 60 smartphone, but that won't matter much. The Vivaz's spec sheet shows a 720 Mhz processor, which should run apps well—if you can find them. AT&T's app store, which is a poorly-designed WAP page, only has a few apps. The adventurous can go out and try to find apps from GetJar.com and other third-party stores, but Symbian fans would be far better served by a higher-quality device like Nokia's N97 Mini ($449, ) and E72.

The built-in e-mail program supposedly handles POP and IMAP accounts, though it had trouble with my Google Apps account, and the phone comes with RoadSync to sync with Exchange. Typing e-mail on this device is so difficult, however, that it really doesn't matter whether the software works or not. The phone also comes with AIM, MSN and Yahoo!-compatible IM programs. Again, you won't want to type anything into these, either.

Multimedia
The Vivaz is a capable multimedia phone hobbled by annoying usability quirks. Take music, for instance. The phone has a 3.5-mm headphone jack, works with Stereo Bluetooth, and syncs with either Windows Media Player or Sony Ericsson's own Media Go software on the PC. So far, so good. The device only has 19 MB (!) of free memory, but it comes with a 2 GB MicroSD card, and my 16 GB SanDisk card worked fine.

The music player has one really annoying, unheralded problem: every time you add new songs, you have to hit an unlabeled "manual update" button on the phone, like you would on a Windows Mobile device from 2003. The phone also had problems identifying and filing podcasts I downloaded with Media Go.

Video on the Vivaz follows a similar storyline. The Vivaz plays WMV and MP4 videos in up to VGA resolution smoothly, and Media Go will reformat nearly any video playable on your PC into something that looks great on the phone's tiny, sharp screen. That screen is tiny, though. The Vivaz comes with YouTube and MobiTV streaming video apps which promise much. But MobiTV, especially, was sluggish and suffered from untouchably small interface elements.

The 8.1-megapixel camera gets absolutely terrific resolution (for a phone camera) in good light, with very little noise and good macro focus. Low-light shots, on the other hand, have the usual cameraphone blur problems caused by too-low shutter speeds. The phone records videos in 720p (1280x720) HD, but my test videos both had a strange skip in them a few seconds in. After that they were smooth, but a bit washed-out.

An Unfortunate Distinction
The Sony Ericsson Vivaz stands out in only one way: it has the worst user interface I have ever seen on a smartphone. The balky resistive touchscreen makes things worse, but I've seen good phones (from Samsung) with resistive touchscreens. The Vivaz' OS simply isn't designed to work well with fingers.

I wish I could recommend the Sony Ericsson Vivaz, because $79.99 (after rebate) for an 8.1-megapixel, 3G cameraphone with a full web browser and HD video recording sounds like a pretty great deal. But I can't. This may be the most infuriating, unusable phone in America. Avoid it.

Hulu Plus (iPhone)

Superb video and audio quality over Wi-Fi and even 3G. Transparent user interface. Can pick up watching a show where you left off on a different device.
Cons
No free iPhone or iPad version (unlike on the desktop). Expensive subscription pricing given the spotty show selection and mandatory commercials.
Bottom Line
Hulu Plus is a solid iPhone app with excellent video performance over both 3G and Wi-Fi networks, but its episode catalog is still full of holes, and you still have to watch occasional commercials even with the subscription fee.

Hulu is already a smash hit on the desktop, but up until now the company has actively blocked its service from running on most mobile phones. Thanks to the new Hulu Plus app, iPhone and iPod touch owners can finally get in on the fun. The app hooks into the company's new $10 per month subscription service, which lets you watch many more episodes on your PC than you previously could for free. The iPhone app is an excellent start, although we'd like to see an even better catalog of TV shows and films.

Content, Setup, and User Interface
Hulu Plus gives you current season passes for many of today's top shows, including Grey's Anatomy, Family Guy, and 30 Rock, instead of just letting you watch the most recent five episodes. It also streams the entire back catalog for some (but not all) of those shows, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Law and Order: SVU, and Ally McBeal. In addition to the Hulu Plus iOS app, which is the subject of this review, you can also access Hulu Plus on the desktop and through Samsung Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players. Hulu promises Sony PS3, Sony TV, and Vizio TV support soon; an Xbox 360 version will follow in early 2011.

For now, the service is only available via invite. You can get one by requesting it from the site directly, or simply chatting about the service on Twitter or Facebook; a representative may see your comment and decide to throw you an invite. The iOS version of Hulu Plus works on the iPhone, iPad, and 3rd generation iPod touch, and requires iOS 3.2 or later. For this review, I tested Hulu Plus 1.0 on a 16GB iPhone 3GS ($99, ) running iOS 4.

The main UI couldn't be simpler. When launched, the app opens to a free gallery that includes selected episodes from some popular shows. Along the bottom of the screen are five icons: Free Gallery, Featured, Popular, Search, and More. The Episodes button on the top right lets you switch to clips, trailers, and full-length movies. Featured and Popular are self-explanatory, and mirror the desktop site. The Search box lacks a type-ahead feature, but it otherwise worked quickly in my tests for finding specific shows.

The More button displays additional options for browsing the entire catalog by TV shows, movies, or recently added episodes. You can manage your queue from here or pick up where you left off from one device to the other. The Movies pane is fairly sparse; there's about 100 flicks in there, and most of them are either old or produced by smaller independent studios. In testing, the UI felt smooth and responsive, and more polished than Netflix's iPad app (Free, )—though the good stuff was yet to come.

Video Performance, a Few Quirks, and Conclusions
Hulu Plus streams video over both 3G and Wi-Fi. The PC app can display up to 720p (1280-by-720) high definition resolution, though obviously you won't get that on an iPhone; even the new iPhone 4 has only a 960-by-640 screen. Video quality was spectacular, both over Wi-Fi and over 3G. The Wi-Fi picture was a little sharper and more vibrant. But the 3G picture certainly held its own, with no evidence of pixelation or stuttering; the frame rate remained smooth.

You can fast forward or back by dragging your finger along the slider at the bottom of the screen. The picture works in portrait or landscape mode, though landscape mode is obviously preferred; the UI itself only works in portrait mode. Stereo audio quality also held up, though as with any phone, you'll want to use quality earbuds or headphones for the best effect. Some movies contain dialog that's tough to hear through the iPhone's small speaker, even at maximum volume.

What you don't get with Hulu Plus is access to a lot of popular shows from many of its member channels. HBO and Showtime supply content to Hulu, for instance, but they're holding back on The Sopranos, The Tudors, and True Blood. Hulu also advertises channels that have few shows—or even one, in the case of BBC America, which only shows episodes of The Office and not, say, Doctor Who. Another glitch: don't accidentally bump the power button on the iPhone, like I did. When I did that, the app threw me out of a show completely. I had to navigate back to the video, cue it up again, and watch another 30 second commercial, before it resumed where it left off. I also noticed a few momentary freeze-ups when navigating the UI, though streaming was surprisingly stutter-free.

Hulu has put together an excellent app marred by a spotty content selection and a high price. I'd probably use Netflix's iPad app, or wait for their iPhone version before signing up for Hulu Plus, especially since a Netflix subscription comes with the added bonus of DVD rentals. However, if you were already thinking of paying the $10 per month for Hulu's desktop login, the iPhone version is a sweet, added bonus.

Heck, get both Hulu Plus and Netflix if you have the budget. Aside from live sports and breaking news, you'll probably never miss that expensive cable TV subscription.

When i tried to call or depending on the sim card occurs following:
Orange- hear the sony ericsson error sound
Vodaphone- Nothing automatically cancels it

Please note all sim cards work on my k800i.

Here we discuss how to flash the firmware. Also debranding a phone is flashing the phone with a generic main and a generic FS of your region

SE phone Firmware has two parts.
Main Firmware which contains all the phone software. Main firmware file has the .mbn extension.
FS is a firmware which has settings and all other data like the default Images and Ringtones and all other files that is used by phone. It has .fbn file extension.

Before you flash the main firmware make GDFS BACKUP. GDFS backup is very important and not to be missed. You also need to have USB Flash Drivers Installed.

The video Shows how to flash the firmwares. Watch the video tutorial (attached at the End).

Now some important information

In this video a w610 firmware is flashed to a k550. But you must use the firmware of your phone, if your phone is a k810 then use k810 firmwares. But if your phone is S500 then you can use either S500 Firmwares or W580 Firmware, etc.
For debranding its necessary to flash both main and fs.
Only the Main can be flashed. Not a problem. But its always recommenced to flash FS also.

Many FS are available for a phone, you must choose the FS that has your language files
By default all FS have English langauge.
You can download FS and Main from TOPSONY. Or for free from TOPSE if the FS for your area is available. Or you can make a request at se-nse firmware section. People those who have the firmware should help you. Also check out my download section for few links.
If you are flashing the FS then you must also do customization or flashing of CDA. If you don’t do then phone won’t start. Your phone will halt boot saying configuration error. To do this you must download Custpack from se-nse download area. And flash them using own_custpack method which is shown in the video as well.

OK …before you can start with you work make sure you have/satisfy the following

1. XS++ : This is the tool which will help you to transfer your new menu icons to your phone. If you dont have it download it from here .

2. Menu Icons : You can do a quick google search for SE Menu icons and you will get lot of sites with good menu icons. If you dont find any, download any of the below menu icons pack from my site. These were not designed by me (Oh! yes you can design your own menu icons using another tool which I will mention later). I dont know who the designer is but I must say I love the designs.

3. 80 – 100 % battery charge : Make sure you battery is fully charged. (This is very important)

4. USB drivers for your phone.

6. Data cable (You cant do anything without this.. bluetooth does not help you in this )

Now here is the step by step procedure.

1. Switch off your phone ( Yes you cannot see a live preview of your new menu… Like DIGG says “Patience My friend is a virtue”)

2. Open “XS++” and you should have something like this

3. Press “Connect” button. Leave the default settings as it is and you will see that XS++ will ask you to connect you phone.

4. Press and hold “c” in your phone and connect your phone to your PC with the USB cable (You have 30 seconds for this).

5. Xs++ will show your phone status (see below screenshot).

6. Now slect the radio button for “FSX” (See below screenshot)

7. Press “Start FSX“. XS++ will start building your phone’s system folders. This may take some time depending on your phone’s model and the amount of data you have in your memory card. Dont worry if XS++ hangs for some time. Wait until all the folders are mapped.

8. Expand “tpa” (Click the + symbol) -> preset -> system -> menu

9. Now you will see a list of files. The PNG files you see are the icons. You will also see a file named menu.ml. This file has all the details about menu icons and their links.

10. Drag and drop the icon files which you have downloaded (Make sure you unzip the contents before uploading). By deafult XS++ replaces all the files but you can delete the existing icons manually.

11. uploading will take some time depending upon the size of your images.

12. Once the upload is complete. Click shutdown and press “Yes” in the confirmation box.

Now disconnect your phone and switch it on.

Does it switch on? NO? OMG what have you done? Did you miss any step?

Yes! dont worry the phone will not switch until you perform the next step.

13. Remove and reinsert the battery. Switch on your phone and have fun with your new menu icons.

MapQuest 4 Mobile (iPhone OS)

When AOL's MapQuest division announced it had added voice navigation to its free iPhone app, people took notice. Android and Symbian owners already have free navigation with Google Maps Navigation and Nokia Ovi Maps (Free, ). Could MapQuest now do the same thing on the iPhone?

Alas, there's a huge gaping hole between "adding voice navigation" and providing a proper in-car GPS experience. MapQuest 4 Mobile is so stripped down it's downright dangerous to use when behind the wheel. It's fine if you're a passenger, but this is no competitor to either paid iPhone GPS apps or to the free apps available on Android and Nokia phones.

Features, Interface Layout, and POI Search
MapQuest is more comparable to the iPhone's built-in Google Maps program than to any third-party GPS application. The main screen is just a map. Below the map is an array of six icons for displaying hotels, gas stations, post offices, and some other commonly searched-for locations, although the choices seemed rather arbitrary. Along the bottom of the screen are four icons for the map view, getting directions, browsing favorite places, or configuring settings. You can start or stop navigation at any time; the usual "my location" icon zeroes the app in on your current position. As before, the app offers support for pedestrian-based navigation, a selection of main icon choices that represent you on the screen, and the ability to save favorite locations.

Voice guidance vaults MapQuest above Google Maps. Unfortunately, the program gives you just enough information to fool you into using it, but not enough to allow you to drive with confidence. MapQuest 4 Mobile doesn't announce the distance to the next turn or what street to turn on; it just says "prepare to turn left." It also offers off-route assistance—with a huge caveat, which I'll get to in a moment—plus gesture-based zoom.

Starting a trip means keying in an address or search term, and then choosing from the results that come up. There's no type-ahead feature, so you have to enter the entire search term. In a series of POI searches, I was able to find most addresses without a problem. Running searches felt clunkier than with Google Maps. For example, searching for "Indian" brought up a ton of restaurants, many of which had nothing to do with Indian food. Numerous restaurant icons also had a plus sign next to them, indicating that multiple locations were found and that I needed to tap to zoom in. But tapping four or five times still wasn't close enough to tell the difference between the locations. Despite the poor search algorithms, inputting a street address generally worked well.

Map View and Navigation Performance
During navigation, the app's route choices seemed to correspond to what I was used to. But given how sparse the voice prompts are, the lack of on-screen information was a disaster. All I saw is the moving 2D map, and some instructions for the next turn in a tiny font. That's a recipe for distracted driving. There's no current speed or trip ETA, no lane assistance (either 2D or 3D), night mode, or speed limit monitoring. The map doesn't even rotate to match your current heading. Worse, this is the only navigation app I've ever tested that lacks a big icon showing the direction of the next turn.

For walking, you can bring up a portrait mode list of step-by-step directions. In landscape mode, it shows one big step per screen, and you can swipe between them. But landscape mode doesn't work for the actual map view. And there's nothing to recommend MapQuest over Google Maps for pedestrians.

Some local routes worked correctly, while others were a nightmare. For example, when exiting I-495 in Massachusetts, on a complex interchange that involved multiple steps, I knew I needed to end up on Route 3 North. But the app didn't show any of the intermediate steps, and it didn't make any announcements either (see screenshot). I had to first read the fine print on the screen to figure out that Route 3 was next. Then, somehow, I was expected to know to abandon the app, and look for the actual road signs heading toward Route 3, before I missed the first one. There's no way I would have made the right decision if I wasn't already familiar with the roads in question.

Route Recalculations and Conclusions
It gets worse. Once you go off route, the app doesn't automatically recalculate a new one. Instead, it pops up a "re-route?" prompt, which you have to tap on manually. This was a constant source of irritation; I'd program a route, and then begin exiting a mall parking lot, only to immediately be told "off-route," with the screen now obscured by the off-route dialog. If I happened to wander back onto the original programmed route, it would resume navigation. But otherwise I had to force a manual reroute while moving. Once done, it wouldn't announce the next step, so I'd have to look at the screen again, but not until after it was done recalculating. I spent way too much time looking at the display, trying to figure out what was coming up and what the app expected me to do, than is prudent when behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.

MapQuest told us they recommend that if you go off-route, to stop and pull over the car to recalculate. I don't see that happening; rather, I see people driving unsafely as they tap at little buttons on the screen.

Google and Nokia have proven that you can do full-featured navigation for free on a smartphone. MapQuest's navigation, which they call "basic routing," could be useful in the hands of a passenger. But drivers should resist the temptation until MapQuest adds more features, which the company said are coming.

MapQuest also offers a more expensive app, MapQuest Navigation, which adds 3D maps and real-time traffic; that app costs $29.99 per year, though, and looks like a poor deal next to numerous other options.

Budget-minded iPhone owners should go with the U.S.-only version of TomTom 1.3 ($49.99, ) for the iPhone, our current Editors' Choice. Even the discounted (and now updated) ALK CoPilot Live ($29.99, ) worked fine for basic in-car navigation in my tests. I don't like giving out a 1.5 rating, especially to a free app with such a good pedigree. But MapQuest Mobile just isn't safe to drive with.

Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10 is the company's first Android smartphone, but that doesn't make it a feeble attempt. In fact, the X10 comes out swinging, with a 4-inch capacitive touch screen and top-notch multimedia apps. It also features Sony Ericsson's slick Timescape interface, which offers a smoother user interface than stock Android 1.6. The Xperia X10 we tested was a final hardware unit, but it still had preproduction software, according to a Sony Ericsson spokesperson. From the looks of it, Sony Ericsson still has work to do on the interface programming, and call quality was surprisingly poor.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz

I feel that the Sony Ericsson Vivaz is truly a handset worth waiting for. It is laden with features, perhaps most impressively its HD video facility, and is incredibly stylish and lightweight at the same time.
As you would expect full web access is available on the phone for easy access to internet sites, and other multi media feature are also covered to keep the user occupied. The music player supports various audio formats and the screen can display album artwork. An FM tuner is built in as is a 3.5mm headphone jack to allow the use of headphones. The 75mb of internal memory is easily expandable to 16GB via the microSD port, however an 8gb card comes supplied. Battery life is impressive too, with 5 hours 20 minutes of 3G talktime or 440 hours in standby.
Perhaps one of the shortfalls with previous Sony Ericsson models was that they fell into either their Walkman or Camera (Cybershot) range, often focussing mainly on these functions at the expense of others. The Vivaz rectifies this problem very well. Powered by Symbian 60 V5 software, the same as is used in the Nokia N97, the Vivaz is quick, functional and easy to use. The camera facility particularly impresses. The 8 mega pixel device incorporates autofocus, LED flash, face & smile recognition and geo tagging. Whats more the phone can shoot video at a resolution of 720p, or in simple terms High Definition. Video is shot at a rate of 24 frames per second and unlike many other handsets features a light and video calling. A movie button makes this Video function instant, perfect for capturing spontaneous moments. Of course the WiFi connectivity allows upload of these film and pictures to a host of online sites.
The first thing that strikes me about the Sony Ericsson Vivaz is its slimline looks, but without the usual sacrifice of features in order to achieve this. Measuring 107 x 52 x 12.5mm and weighing just 97 grammes, the Vivaz is smaller on all counts than the Satio, and weighs in a sizeable 30 grammes less. A 3.2″ TFT touchscreen dominates the front of the handset. This is a vivid screen and of a good size for such a small handset. Displaying a resolution of 360 x 640 the screen is capable of displaying a massive 16 million colours. An accelorometer chip facilitates an auto rotate function. Adding to the aesthetic value,Sony Ericsson also plan to launch the Vivaz in a range of striking colours.
One of Sony Ericsson’s new handsets due for the first quarter of 2010 is the Vivaz. More akin to the Satio rather than there Walkman series handsets, the Vivaz does a very good job of matching eye catching looks with impressive functionality.

However, thanks to an exclusive hands-on we now know just how much potential this 8.1-Megapixel smartphone has. The Sony Ericsson Vivaz has been eagerly anticipated, thanks in part to the disappointing reception of the larger Sony Ericsson Satio. Can this Symbian-based touchscreen device do any better, or is it heading for a similar fate as its larger sibling?

Tech website ElectricPig managed to get hold of a pre-production sample of the Sony Ericsson Vivaz. For a start, it’s a lot smaller than the bulky Sony Ericsson Satio, due to the use of an 8.1-Megapixel camera rather than a 12.1-Megapixel chip. According to Electric Pig, this has an impact on picture quality, however, with photographs appearing washed out, and HD video proving a little blurry round the edges.

The 3.2-inch screen impressed, with a sharp 640 x 360-pixel resolution providing crisp images and video playback. It’s via the touchscreen that most functions are carried out, with the Symbian operating system translating your prods and swipes into actions. Responsive and easy to use, it’s one of the Sony Ericsson Vivaz’s better features.

As with many touchscreen phones, the onscreen keyboard apparently falls below expectations, although this could change on full production models. If it doesn’t, however, the lack of text correction could prove a deal-breaker for many consumers.

All-in-all, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz is off to a bit of a mixed start then. Thankfully, there’s still time for updates to be incorporated into the final design, which could lead to a completely different user experience.

Sony Ericsson Jalou’s Camera

The Sony Ericsson Jalou is a fashion phone through and through. It demands attention and it deserves longing looks. But unlike some fashion phones it also has not been created with its form privileged over its functionality. There are many useful features to be found within the Jalou, but it is the built-in digital camera that we shall be dissecting in detail in order to assess just how hot this phone really is.

The Sony Ericsson Jalou camera unit has a 3.2 megapixel sensor and is found mounted on the top of the phone above the secondary screen. There is no flash, although the camera itself is a good little performer and can usually adjust the brightness automatically to make sure that pictures in dim areas are not too dull. The camera has a built-in digital zoom function which can magnify your subjects up to 3.2 times, so whether you are looking for better framing or trying to snap a celeb who has just strolled by in the distance you can easily do so whilst screaming ‘enhance’ like you are in a Hollywood film.

Despite the fairly average image capture resolution of the Jalou, it does sport some useful software apps which can help to enhance the capabilities of the camera. For example, once you have taken a picture, if you are not particularly pleased with the results you can apply the Photo Fix filter. This quickly analyses your picture and applies tweaks and improvements to make it look its best. If the light levels are a little low the brightness will get turned up and if there is a little distortion or camera shake the Photo Fix will attempt to clean the picture up to the best of its abilities.

The Sony Ericsson Jalou camera can work in tandem with the built-in GPS function for some geo-tagging. This means that when you take a picture, the image file will be tagged with information of where you where in the world. With your precise location added you can upload the picture to your PC and store it in geographical order. You can also use the 3G network connection to upload your pictures directly to your blog or photo storage service. Many are compatible with geo-tagged images and you can combine your photos with those taken by others to create panoramas, or compare your shots side by side.

As well as using the Sony Ericsson Jalou camera to make your own website or add photos to your social networking profile, you can subscribe to the photo blog of a friend or family member and have the Jalou automatically download newly added pictures to the phone’s memory. You could then get your mates to subscribe to your own visual blog and follow the goings on in your life through the pictures that you snap with the Sony Ericsson Jalou camera and upload to the internet.

The Jalou can also be used to record video and the quality is again rather impressive in this area. With a solid frame rate, a decent capture resolution and high quality audio all thrown in, you can make miniature movies in moments and then transfer them to your PC for some serious editing.

Most critics have responded with mild surprise to the Jalou. But this surprise has not been levelled at the design, but rather at the wealth of useful features which would not typically be associated with a stylish flip phone such as this. Sony Ericsson's new Kurara phone will have a whopping 8 mega-pixel camera. This trendy new Sony Ericsson Symbian phone is all about the photos and the video and follows the Satio in SE's communications and media portfolio.

Called the Vivaz, the camera has continuous autofocus video shooting with image stabilization, face detection, and captures the video in HD. Looking at the photos should be pretty nice as well, on the 3.2 inch screen WVGA screen.

The handset has an unusual curvature round the edges which Sony Ericsson are making a bit of a design trademark.

It'll be available in four colors -- Moon Silver, Cosmic Black, Galaxy Blue, and Venus Ruby and should be launching worldwide in the next few months.

Struggling phone maker Sony Ericsson has unveiled its new 'flagship' handset which it claims will topple the iPhone from its touchscreen pedestal.

The Satio phone combines a 12.1 megapixel camera with a Walkman to create 'the best of both our products', said Nathan Vautier, managing director of Sony Ericsson UK.

It also offers free access to Hollywood movies and a touch-screen keypad.

'This is a new Sony Ericsson you see before you today,' Steve Walker, vice president of marketing, Sony Ericsson Mobile, said at the launch in London. 'It's taking all the things we have become... and taking a big step beyond.'

The world's fourth-largest maker of mobile phones is launching the phone, along with two others, to help stall a slump in mobile phone sales.

Worldwide mobile phone sales fell by 8.6 per cent in the first quarter of the year, according to research firm Gartner.

Sony Ericsson posted a £293 million loss in that time and demand for its handsets fell by around 35 per cent, which the company attributed to the global financial crisis.

Gartner said 'mid-market' phones, those traditionally sold by Sony Ericsson, suffered the deepest dip in sales.

But the market for 'smartphones' such as the iPhone and the Nokia 5800 was growing, it said. The new Satio is also a 'smartphone'.

It features applications for websites such as YouTube and Facebook and it also boasts free access to Hollywood movies and a touch-screen keypad.

Mr Vautier said the Satio - previously called the Idou - and the other new phones, the Aino and Yari handsets, 'revolutionise' the mobile phone gaming and audio experience by merging communication and entertainment.

The Yari phone is focused primarily on games and allow users to play using hands-free technology in a similar way to Nintendo's Wii console.

While the Aino handset can be connected to a Playstation 3 to enable users to access media content on their gaming console from their mobile.

The products are set to hit the high street later this year.

Our team has had the opportunity to evaluate all six new models from Sony Ericsson - 3 megapixel camera phones, a new clamshell and its music-orientated twin; the successor of the famous Sony Ericsson K700 and the cheapest Sony Ericsson camera phone. More than a hundred of live pictures for you in this review only!

We have been given the chance to test the hottest Sony Ericsson products soon after their worldwide presentation. We were eager to see them more than ever before for two basic reasons: Sony Ericsson launched not one, but six new models; the best among them feature particularly fascinating parameters.

Sony Ericsson K790 and K800

It's no fashion model

My first encounter with this phone was marked by a certain feeling of disappointment as to its design. In all official pictures the phone looked like a square box totally blank of ideas. Seen in reality it gives the same impression. Once I had taken a closer look at its construction, however, I kind of started to change my opinion.

The front cover of the device is fully purpose-built. Enough space has been assigned for both the keypad and the display. The front side does not feature decorative elements because of simple lack of space. There are silver bands on the phone sides, you will not find any edge rounding on its rear cover also. The entire look of Sony Ericsson K800 is fully determined by the expectations of the end user, that is to say, customers tend to see their phones as electric devices meant to serve for both work and fun, but in no way do they look as a fashion accessory.

Sony Ericsson K800 is a little bit bigger than its forerunner K750. What I cannot get accustomed to is the bulging camera area on the back of the device. In fact, it's not a real obstacle to functionality it is just an impression of mine caused by the unusual angle, under which the phone lays on a surface. Pay attention to the fact that the camera cover may move accidentally if you carry the phone in your pocket. The phone is made of matt black plastics, due to which fingerprints remain relatively invisible. Yet, the cover glass of the display and the glossy cover of the camera do need to be wiped from time to time.

A few interesting details

I have no special remarks to make as to the qualities of the keypad and the joystick. Keys are all big enough. Marked by strong gaps, they are also easy to recognize by touch. Each press is followed by a quiet click sound. There is plenty of space for one's thumb to be comfortably held against the edge of the joystick. The pad of the joystick is large enough to ensure a reliable press likewise. All in all, the tiny functional buttons squeezed between the two main functional keys seem to be the only minor drawback as pressing them requires certain concentration.

The music button is located on the left side of the phone. It is quite small and a bit too embedded. On the opposite side there is a pair of buttons, which could have been designed slightly bigger too.

Let's get used to Cyber-shot

At the press conference we have been informed that the manufacturer of Cyber-shot cameras is going to launch a campaign as huge as the one of Walkman. This famous mark of Sony digital cameras will be used as a brand for the production of the best camera phones ever. Btw, this is exactly the story of Walkman being a sheltering brand for the best music phones on the current market. Yet, all those dreaming of a Cyber-shot Walkman please do not get pretty excited as no such "perfect" device is currently being developed. In fact, Cyber-shot will be more or less a different type of a Walkman.

Camera cover is not very stable

To activate the camera simply slide its cover aside. I was eager to see the new graphic camera interface so hugely advertised during Sony Ericsson's launching campaign, but eventually I did not observe any crucial difference between the new model and Sony Ericsson K750. Even though users are offered far more setting options than in any other camer phone, Sony Ericsson K800 still lacks scene modes or manual exposure settings (both being common features of standard digital cameras).

The viewfinder in Sony Ericsson K800 opens a fascinating view, mainly due to the qualities of the display. Pictures in full resolution are taken surprisingly fast. Focusing is almost instant, as well. In addition, the camera features an interesting function called BestPic, which first allows the user to take 9 pictures in full resolution within a mere second and consequently lets them choose which one they like best. Once the preferred picture has been selected, the rest get deleted automatically.

The phone is also equipped with a xenon flash, whose performance is unexpectedly good. Alike any common digital camera, it is able to lighten a darker scene at the considerable distance of several meters. Manufacturer's representatives did their best to assure us that this flash light is extremely energy-friendly. However, it has one important drawback when compared to standard LEDs - it works in a stroboscopic mode only and therefore can hardly be used as an emergency lamp.

The gallery, in which ready pictures can be browsed, is new too. It is organized in the form of a chronologically ordered album. Pictures are filed into folders by date. The full-screen view option is present, of course. I apologize for not being able to offer you sample photos taken with Sony Ericsson K800. Seeing that the presented testing models only featured temporary firmware I did not have the opportunity to send pictures through Bluetooth, unfortunately. So sample photos are still to come.

New photo album

Let me mention one more thing regarding blogs. The original idea of the manufacturer was not that the user would send pictures to their friends' mobile phone, but that they would rather display those pictures in internet, where everybody would be able to view them in full resolution. Instead, friends would receive a standard SMS with an internet address.

Extensive phonebook and repeated events, great!

The phone is equipped with an MP3 player that is identical to the players used in all other Walkman models. In other words, files are once again sorted by artist and album name. The phone comes with a pair of standard earphones and 64MB of internal memory. If you need an additional memory card, you will have to buy it separately as no such one is delivered in the box.

MP3 player's orange background is expected to disappear from the final version of this phone, as orange is a patent of Walkman models only.

The phone supports Bluetooth 2.0 and is therefore able to broadcast stereophonic sound signal through a pair of wireless earphones.

Browsing the menu was a delightful experience. The fine resolution of the display presents a truly breathtaking picture, which Sony Ericsson has underlined with tiny animations, as usual. The main menu consists of 12 nicely elaborated icons. Extensive menus mainly consist of text. Tabs can often be seen too. I was pleased by the instance, with which keys would react to my press.

Color scheme is different

The novelties in Sony Ericsson K800, when compared to the current K750 model, can hardly be seen at a first look. Yet they are crucial. First, the capacity of the phonebook has been extended to 1000 contacts and 2500 numbers. Repeated events in the phonebook are another pleasant surprise. The model we tested permitted us to set up a day repetition only, but the final firmware is supposed to offer a more varied setup options.

Following readers' requests I made an attempt to search for an Office documents viewer in the extras menu, but I did not succeed. Present official representatives were not able to tell me, whether such a viewer would appear in the final model for a certainty, either. By all means, there is no doubt that this phone will manage to run several extra java applications at a time.

The same old road

Sony Ericsson K800/K790 gives me more or less the same impression like the one the forerunner K750 left in me a year ago. By now it is already as clear as daylight that this new multimedia device is going to be successful. The reasons are numerous: it serves both for work and fun, it offers intuitive control as well as all modern mobile functions all in a stretch. What's more, its price is quite reasonable - approximately 430 euro. Sony Ericsson will hit the market this summer. No exact date has been officially stated yet.

Those of us with smartphones know what it's like to barely make it through the day with a single charge, desperately turning down brightness and Wi-Fi in the hopes of eking out a few extra minutes of mobile goodness. The Technocell PowerPak XT and PowerPak DUO are the latest clever solutions to smartphones' power hunger.

This combination charger and battery pack, in the form of a wall-wart power adapter, works with any USB-equipped device. Just plug the adapter into the wall, and it charges itself and your phone at the same time. When you leave for the day, take it with you, and it functions as an external battery. Though this is not the first attempt to address the needs of frequent mobile gadget users (Energizer offers a similar product), its dual-purpose charger and battery design is undeniably convenient.

The product's manufacturer, Technocel, claims an additional 4.5 hours of talk time from the XT and its 1,600mAh cell and an additional 6 hours from the DUO's 2,500mAh. Given that the iPhone and Droid's batteries generally run in the 1,200mAh-to-1,400mAh range, expect around double the battery life you'd usually get from the phone with the XT and triple with the DUO. For those who take more than one USB-powered gadget on the go, the DUO offers two USB ports instead of the XT's one. Both models will be available January 31st, with the XT's MSRP at $50 and the DUO's at $60.

Smartphones Used Increasingly to Make Purchases

E-commerce is about 15 years old on the desktop, give or take. But it's finally beginning to take hold on smartphones as well.

MediaPost reports that nearly 4 in 10 smartphone owners have bought something not related to mobile over their devices during the past six months, according to new data from Compete, a Web analytics firm. That's significant progress, given that mobile barcode scanning, standardized payment services, and secure device purchases haven't hit the mainstream in the U.S. yet.

Two examples cited in the report: 14 percent of users have bought books, DVDs, or video games, while 12 percent bought movie tickets. Just over 40 percent of iPhone and Android users used their phones to research pricing, while an average of 35 percent of those same users read reviews on their phones before making a purchase.

It's no surprise that when asked what gets in the way of mobile shopping, users cite poor mobile site designs, as well as the fact that many sites just didn't load when requested.

While we've spent a ton of ink talking about the PalmOne Treo 650 and the Motorola MPx220, the fact remains that there are quite a few smart phone options out there. Take, for example, the Sony Ericsson P910a, the successor to the likable P900. Running on the Symbian 7.0 operating system, the P910a is a full-fledged GSM device that does almost everything you can ask for. But while some smart phones are more PDA than phone and others more phone than PDA, the P910a seems to be equal parts phone, PDA, and multimedia device. With a high-resolution display, an integrated (but only VGA) camera, Bluetooth support, and massive battery life, the only thing holding back the P910a is a hefty price tag of more than $700. Of course, this device is so chock-full of features that it may actually be worth it; also, the cost should come down once the handset is picked up by a carrier.

Compared to standalone mobiles, the Sony Ericsson P910a is on the large side. Of course, next to other smart phones, it's right in the mix, at 2.3 by 1 by 4.5 inches and 5.5 ounces. As evidenced by its predecessor, Sony Ericsson is good at putting together well-designed products, and in this regard, the P910a is no slouch. The generous 3-inch-diagonal touch screen is vibrant and crisp (262,000 colors), and it rotates to support Landscape mode. You can't change the text size itself, but a zoom feature effectively does the trick. And though it may take a bit of acclimation, the P910a is comfortable to hold while you're talking.

The stocky P910a isn't for the faint of heart.

Aside from the great display, the P910a's most notable feature--and the most significant change from the P900--is the flip-down QWERTY keyboard (see below). In phone mode, when the flip is up, the backside of the QWERTY keyboard is a standard numerical keypad that also boasts an OK, Back, Clear, and Menu key. Like the phone itself, the keys are silver, and the letters and numbers are white. In darker situations, seeing your way around the keypad is simple, thanks to the backlighting. Furthermore, the keys are raised such that dialing by feel is a snap. That said, there are no Talk and End keys; you'll need to use the OK button instead. While this isn't a big deal, we prefer dedicated call buttons.

When the flip is opened, you're greeted with a full QWERTY keyboard that is bound to create conversation. Though surely usable, the tiny keys are crowded together, and the flip's construction worries us. There's no truly comfortable way to type while holding the phone, and the flip mechanism seems rather fragile. We didn't perform a complete torture test, but we could imagine a situation where the flip-down keyboard could be broken. If it worries you too much, however, you can remove the keyboard via the included screwdriver and use the touch screen or the Graffiti-like handwriting-recognition feature. Another pet peeve: Unlike the numeric keypad, the keys on the QWERTY are not backlit. We also were disappointed with the keyboard's Enter button. Because it doesn't activate the highlighted Done buttons on the screen, we had to type our messages, then use the stylus to tap Done or Send. This is not terribly inconvenient, but it is silly.

Add on: Expand the P910a's storage with the Memory Stick Duo slot.

On the mobile's left spine, you'll find the power button, the headset jack, and a handy scrollwheel that not only adjusts volume during calls but also navigates through menu items on lists and the home screen. On the handset's right spine is the Memory Stick Duo slot, the stylus holder, a dedicated camera button, and a Home Screen button that fires up the integrated WAP 2.0 browser. As with the P900, the VGA camera lens and a self-portrait mirror are located on the handset's rear face.

The P910a ships with a saucer-shaped docking cradle that has a unique cable-management system for easy travel. The docking cradle has a USB 2.0 cable as well as a power cord. Once docked, the P910a sits at a nice angle that enables you to see it when it's on your desk. Unfortunately, the cradle was designed such that connecting it to the device is not a matter of simply sliding it into a slot. Instead, you must tilt the P910a to attach it to a recessed port.

The Sony Ericsson P910a has a ton of features that should please the most demanding smart phone fanatics. The Symbian 7.0 OS involves a learning curve for newbies, but it is exceptionally easy to use after some practice. The dynamic 64MB of embedded memory--a particular boon compared to the Treo 650's 22MB of user-accessible memory--lets you store as many contacts as space will allow, with room in each entry for multiple phone numbers, addresses, and other information; you can hold an additional 250 names on the SIM card. Contacts can be assigned to caller groups or paired with any of 24 polyphonic ring tones or a picture for caller ID (where available). Furthermore, the phone ships with a 32MB Memory Stick Duo card. While this is a nice amount for storing photos and whatnot, anyone who plans on using the P910a as a mobile audio device will need to invest in a much larger Memory Stick Duo card (the slot can handle cards up to 1GB).

When it comes to staying connected, the P910a includes an infrared port and Bluetooth, as well as USB connectivity through the charging cradle. Any of these methods can transfer data between the device and a computer, and you can also use the Bluetooth to connect to a wireless headset or as a modem with a Bluetooth-enabled laptop. On the downside, the P910a doesn't support Wi-Fi, but since it's so easy to connect to the Web, it may ultimately not be a big issue.

The phone and handheld functions are pretty much what you'd expect from such a high-end handset, and they include a calendar, a task list, a notepad, an easy-to-use speakerphone, vibrate mode, a calculator, an alarm clock, text and multimedia messaging, a sound recorder, and Quickword and Quicksheet for viewing and editing Word and Excel documents, respectively. The P910a ships with two games, Solitaire and Chess, which you can play against another P910a user via SMS. It also sports fairly robust audio and video player applications. The integrated MP3 player produces clean sound, and the process of moving files onto the player was much improved over the P900's. You can customize the smart phone with a variety of wallpaper, color themes, and sounds, and you can download additional applications from Sony Ericsson.

One of the P910a's best features is its ability to sync with IMAP4 mail servers using Smartner Duality Always-on Mail for corporate e-mail support of Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes. That said, however, depending on your corporate e-mail situation, getting this to work may be difficult. In other words, be prepared to enlist the help of your IT people. Comparatively speaking, getting access to corporate e-mail with devices such as the RIM BlackBerry 7750 is not only supereasy but can be done without the involvement of your IT team. Of course, the P910a also supports POP3 and SMTP e-mail and ships with a WAP 2.0 wireless Web browser that makes reading Web mail such as Yahoo and Hotmail a cinch. While the WAP browser is nice, it's often slow. This, as it turns out, was more of a minor pet peeve.
